Category: FrameWorks Workshops CONNECT FrameWorks Workshops present
The Employee-Ownership Alternative: Building the Company You Want
In partnership with the Beyster Institute at the Rady School, UC San Diego
Program Overview: Entrepreneurs have choices about the kind of company they want to create. The VC route - giving up control over your destiny in exchange for funding - is well-known, but entrepreneurs should also be aware of the choices that employee ownership can provide. By sharing equity ownership with the rest of your team, you can gain critical advantages that help the company grow – and on your own terms. SAIC is one great example; there are now many more.
Benefits of Attending:
· An overview of employee ownership and how it can help a start-up venture;
· Techniques for implementing employee ownership;
· Key considerations in making it work well;
· Actual examples of employee owned ventures and how they operate.
Who should attend: Founders, CEOs, and other leaders of tech ventures who want to know how companies like SAIC have used employee ownership to grow and thrive on their own terms.
About the Presenters: Martin Staubus, Associate Director of the Beyster Institute at the Rady School, is a nationally recognized expert on the design and operation of arrangements that give employees an equity interest in the company they work for. He has more than twenty-five years of experience in the employee ownership field in several capacities, including practicing lawyer, VP of human resources, and management consultant. Staubus holds a B.A. in economics from UC Berkeley, an M.B.A., and a law degree.
Jeff Young is Chairman and General Manager of ATA Engineering, a San Diego engineering firm specializing in the application of computer-aided engineering to solve hardware design challenges in the aerospace, biomedical, entertainment, and consumer products industries. Jeff holds a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering.

Conquering Diabetes: The Pursuit of a Cure
Presented by: Matthias von Herrath
Director, Center for Diabetes Research
Professor, Division of Developmental Immunology
La Jolla Institute for Allergy & Immunology
REGISTER HERE
Program Overview:
Dr. Matthias von Herrath is an internationally recognized scientist known for bringing “firsts” to the worldwide type 1 diabetes research landscape. In December, he drew international headlines and scientific praise for his creation of the world’s first movies showing the cellular destruction of type 1 diabetes in real-time in mouse models, a remarkable feat that is providing insights into the disease process as never before possible. Then in January, he and his team published work proving - for the first time in human tissues - the specific immune system T cells that trigger pancreatic beta cell destruction underlying type 1 diabetes, information previously known only in mouse studies. Another breakthrough in von Herrath’s years of study is the development of a combination therapy that has shown significant promise for stopping early-stage type 1 diabetes in mouse models.
Due to his renowned research on type 1 diabetes, von Herrath recently was selected to head a new translational diabetes center to be opened this summer in Seattle by Novo Nordisk. Focused on the development of type 1 diabetes immunotherapies, von Herrath’s position will allow him to realize his dream of playing a key role in clinical trials on potential type 1 diabetes treatments, while continuing to lead his distinguished research program at the La Jolla Institute on a part-time basis.
Join us for a stimulating lecture by one of the world’s most prominent diabetes researchers, as he discusses a disease that affects over 3 million Americans with over 15,000 children diagnosed every year. Von Herrath continues to lead the way to making this devastating and chronic disease preventable, more effectively treatable and ultimately cured.
Who Should Attend: Scientists, engineers, physicians, healthcare leaders, venture capitalists, technology and life sciences professionals, services providers and business leaders.
About the Speaker: Dr. von Herrath is head of the Diabetes Research Center at the La Jolla Institute for Allergy & Immunology and is generally regarded as one of the world’s leading researchers in the type 1 diabetes field. He has made several key advances and has been recognized on numerous occasions for his achievements. He is the recipient of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation’s prestigious Scholar Award and in 2008 received the Outstanding Scientific Achievement Award from the American Diabetes Association.
Dr. von Herrath joined the La Jolla Institute as a faculty member in the Division of Developmental Immunology in 2001. He received his M.D. in Medicine from the Freiburg Medical School in Freiburg, Germany, and went to the Scripps Research Institute for his postdoctoral studies, prior to joining the La Jolla Institute. Dr. von Herrath is also an Adjunct Professor in UC San Diego’s Department of Pediatrics and an editor/reviewer of numerous scientific journals.

Such entrepreneurs have contributed to the business sectors that shape our local economy, improve our quality of life and continue to inspire future generations of innovators and entrepreneurs. Greene will be the 10th inductee into CONNECT's Entrepreneur Hall of Fame. Other members include Dr. Irwin Jacobs, Walter Zable, Dr. Ivor Royston, Dr. William Rastetter, Dr. J. Robert Beyster, Neal and Linden Blue, Dr. Peter Preuss and Dr. Gene Ray.
Howard "Ted" Greene—Distinguished Biotech Inventor, Entrepreneur, Investor and Pioneer Prior to his retirement in 1998, Ted was Chairman of Amylin Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a company he co-founded in 1987 to pioneer research of the hormone amylin. The company has launched two first-in-class diabetes drugs and is advancing a rich pipeline of drug candidates for treating metabolic disorders. Prior to Amylin, Ted co-founded Biovest Partners, a VC firm that in two years provided seed capital and management leadership for six medical technology start-ups (all of which went public; four of which have been acquired); and was CEO of Hybritech Incorporated from its inception until its acquisition by Eli Lilly & Company in 1986. At Hybritech, Ted was co-inventor of its principal product line, a monoclonal antibody assay system that has led to a new generation of immunodiagnostics. He grew Hybritech into an 800-employee company that launched the first monoclonal antibody diagnostics products. Currently, Ted is a director of several early-stage startups in the biotech and internet fields. Ted's contributions to the biotech community have been vast, including significant contributions to overall medical research and health care. He has created thousands of jobs for San Diegans. Leasing Fundamentals: How to Save Money, Reduce Risk, and Manage the Leasing Process
Category: FrameWorks Workshops In partnership with Jones Lang LaSalle, Squar Milner, Mintz Levin and AVRP Studios
Program Overview:
Because facilities costs are often the second largest expense after payroll, it is crucial that businesses maximize their negotiating leverage to enhance their bottom-line. This means effectively managing the leasing process from start to finish so that you keep your project on time and within budget, while optimizing the quality and efficiency of your working environment.
In this workshop, we will discuss the current state of the economy as it relates to the real estate market in San Diego County and provide education and insight you can use in your next lease transaction to save money, reduce risk and extract the optimal concession packages based on what other tenants are getting in today’s environment. Learn how to save up to 35% on a lease renewal, ensure your tenant improvements are not over budget or behind schedule, get the best deal you can in this market, and protect yourself from often overlooked risks.
We will also discuss workplace trends and cultural shifts, including increasing employee productivity and morale in the workplace; how we optimize Gen X and Gen Y in the workplace: and why CEO’s believe the workplace itself will be the most important investment in the next five years.
What attendees are saying:
“I just renewed my lease right before I attended this seminar. I should have attended the seminar first! What valuable information. “Jack DeFranco – CEO, Targeson, Inc.
Highlights:
· Where are the best deals occurring in San Diego and where are landlords gaining ground? Sorrento Mesa? UTC? Downtown, Class A or B?
· What concessions are other tenants receiving and what should you ask for. How much free rent, moving or cabling allowances you can obtain.
· What are some of the most common leasing mistakes and how can you avoid making them?
· How you should plan your space to accommodate the changing needs and expectations of a multigenerational workforce?
· How can you avoid costly tenant improvement missteps?
· Who are the landlords in the San Diego market and why should you "underwrite your landlord"?
· How will the new lease accounting rules impact your financial statements?
· To sublease or not to sublease? Weighing the risks and benefits.
Who should attend:
CFO, VP Finance, CEO, COO, President, Real Estate and Facility Department; anyone responsible for lease strategy, negotiation and implementation, especially if your lease expires in the next 2 years.
