Stem cell research, after nearly a decade’s progress, has achieved a landmark milestone in January 2009, with FDA’s permission of the first human clinical trial of embryonic stem cell therapy sponsored by Geron Corporation. Based on the original studies of Dr. Hans Keirstead’s group at UC Irvine, this therapy has been shown to restore limb function in rats with neck spinal cord injuries, and is being tested on human patients with thoracic spinal cord injuries. This marks the maturity of stem cell research in certain fields. In addition, more stem cell therapies are in the pipeline to move to the clinical stage in the near future. Besides the progress in clinical studies, tools and technologies in stem cell research are also gaining momentum in recent years. The power of stem cell research is not only limited to regenerative medicine, but also can be utilized to generate disease models for drug discovery. For instance, through the use of iPS cell technology, skin cells from patients may be converted to any mature cell types that carry all the genetic information for a particular disease. These disease cells provide valuable tools for the discovery of novel drugs. This SABPA forum has invited opinion leaders from academia and industry to address the progress, challenges, and future directions of this rich and vibrant field.

CONNECT FrameWorks Workshops present: Attracting Angel Capital: Tips from Frontline Experts
Category: FrameWorks Workshops In partnership with San Diego Tech Coast Angels and Wilson Sonsini Goodrich Rosati
Program Overview:
In the current economic and venture capital climate, angel investment is one of the most critical sources of start-up capital. Angel networks are the source of the majority of this funding. These national and local groups are comprised of high net worth individuals who meet -- formally or informally -- to vet and discuss deals and learn about the best new business opportunities. Each network works in a slightly different way: some solicit applications via the group’s website while others require an introduction. Some charge fees for applications or presentations and others are free to apply. Along with capital, angel networks bring additional added value. The majority of members are successful business people with valuable industry contacts, experience, management knowledge, and creative ideas. Researchers inexperienced with entrepreneurship and start-ups with a lean management team value angels' contributions as company directors and advisors.
Hear stories of success and lessons from failure, from a panel including active angel investors, attorneys who work closely with startups, and entrepreneurs who have received angel funding.
What you will learn:
• Who are angels? What motivates them and why do they join angel networks? How do they differ from and work with venture capital firms?
• What do angels look for in a funding application? What’s the role of IP?
• How does Tech Coast Angels work? How do companies apply, get screened, and get funded?
• What are typical structures for angel investments? What are the implications for the company?
• What happens after funding?
• What does the process look like from the company’s perspective?
Who should attend:
Founders, CEOs, and managers who are seeking funding, as well as scientists and technology experts considering a business start-up in need of Angel financing.
About the Presenters:
Jack Florio, Board Member, Tech Coast Angels
Jack is Senior Vice President with Brinson Patrick Securities Corporation, a New York based investment banking boutique serving the equity capital raising needs of small cap to Fortune 500 publicly traded companies. Previously Jack had a 30-year career with Eli Lilly and Company where he held a number of senior management positions in the US and abroad until 2001.
Jack arrived in San Diego in April 2001 and has taken on full and part time senior management roles in seven different biotech and medical device companies in the US, Europe, and China..
Jack also is very active in the community in a variety of roles including working with CONNECT on Springboard panels and other programs. Jack is currently on the boards of the San Diego Chapter of the American Liver Foundation, the San Diego Venture Group and BIOCOM as well as Amplyx Pharmaceuticals and IYIA Technologies.
Marty Waters, Partner, Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati

He also handles a wide variety of complex commercial transactions for clients, including public offerings of equity and debt securities; friendly and hostile mergers, acquisitions, and divestitures; licensing transactions; venture capital financings; equipment leasing transactions; and the formation of partnerships, strategic alliances, and joint ventures.

His previous company, Client Shop, was named San Diego’s fastest growing company. ClientShop employed over 160 people with offices in the US and internationally. Frontiers in Science & Technology: A Non-Invasive Wireless Window into the Brain
Category: Frontiers in Science & Technology CONNECT Frontiers in Science and Technology
In partnership with Morrison & Forester LLP
presents
A Non-Invasive Wireless Window into the Brain
Presented by:
Philip Low, Ph.D.
Founder, Chairman & CEO, NeuroVigil, Inc.
Adjunct Professor, Stanford School of Medicine
Visiting Professor, Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Research Affiliate, Salk Institute for Biological Studies
Program Overview:
Severe neuropathologies are usually diagnosed after significant, largely irreversible brain damage has already occurred. Dr. Low's goal is for people to reliably have access to their own brain health in real time, well in advance of the onset of cognitive symptoms. To this end, he has developed groundbreaking computational techniques which do not require data from loud and costly brain scanners or multichannel electrode arrays which restrict a person's overall ability to freely interact with the world. Instead, these algorithms allow for a rapid quantification, analysis, and classification of data from a single channel of electroencephalogram (EEG); prevent the need for manual analysis; and use the dynamic range of sleep EEGs as a window into brain activity.
These new techniques have made possible the identification of known brain patterns in unexpected places, such as in birds, as well as novel brain patterns in humans including a novel human sleep state. Dr. Low will discuss these findings and cover new approaches NeuroVigil has developed to dramatically simplify the collection of single-channel data in humans and other species, including the iBrain, enabling widespread comparative analysis of neural activity as well as early testing of novel pharmaceutical drugs.
Who Should Attend:
Scientists, engineers, physicians, healthcare leaders, venture capitalists, technology and life sciences professionals, services providers, and business leaders.
About the Speaker:
Dr. Philip Steven Low received his undergraduate degree from the University of Chicago where he studied Mathematics, Neuroscience and Physics, and invented novel neurosurgical techniques undermining the role neuroscientists have attributed to the Neocortex. He did is graduate work at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, which he attended on the recommendation of the late Francis Crick, Nobel Laureate of DNA fame. At Salk, Dr. Low invented the SPEARS algorithm and authored one of the shortest Ph.D. theses on record, "A New Way to Look at Sleep: Separation & Convergence," a one-page solution to a longstanding problem in brainwave analysis. The experimental and computational methods Dr. Low has developed challenge our understanding of brainwaves during sleeping and awake states in humans and across species. His work has been featured in technical and popular articles including, CNN, The MIT Technology Review, The Huffington Post, The New Scientist, The Economist, The New York Times, etc., and has garnered awards from the National Science Foundation, Merck & Co., The Ray Thomas Edwards and Kavli Foundations for Innovative Research, as well as five awards from the Sloan and Swartz Foundations and an extraordinary ability recognition in the field of brain signal detection from the United States Government.
To bring his innovations to the market, Dr. Low founded NeuroVigil, Inc., an award-winning wireless neurodiagnostics company comprising several nobel laureates and founders of Fortune 500 companies. The company, which develops the iBrain, a wireless iPod for the brain, and assists many of the world’s top pharmaceutical companies with outpatient drug evaluations, won the 2008 annual Draper Fisher Jurvetson 250K Venture Challenge, the UC San Diego 50K Entrepreneurship Competition and delivered the IN3 MedTech Investment in Medicine Summit Keynote Address. The company is backed by some of the world’s savviest entrepreneurs, including Qualcomm’s Irwin Jacobs.
