Overview: The last decade has seen an explosion of advances in life sciences research which has spawned hundreds of start-up biotech companies and created thousands of jobs. These cutting-edge discoveries will undoubtedly alter how health challenges are diagnosed and treated in the U.S. and across the globe. As the discoveries are commercialized, numerous high-quality, high-wage jobs will materialize helping stabilize America's economy. However, this promising scenario could become more clouded as access to capital continues to be limited by economic and regulatory barriers, as well as impending budget cuts.

As life-science research institutions increase their focus on commercialization of discoveries and develop strategies to help start-up companies succeed, it is imperative that Congress and the Obama Administration understand how federal research funding results in successful discoveries, start-ups and job creation.

On February 2, CONNECT will host its 4th "Innovation 101" Capitol Hill Briefing on life sciences research. The briefing will highlight a successful San Diego biotech start-up that is commercializing a discovery produced by the Sanford Burnham Institute's world-class researchers supported by federal funding. CONNECT is pleased to host this briefing with distinguished speakers including:

  • Dr. John Reed – Chief Executive Officer, Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute
  • Mr. Scott Salka – Chief Executive Officer, CendR Inc.

Dr. Reed and Mr. Salka will discuss the challenges faced by research institutes trying to translate their discoveries into viable products and companies. Specifically they will highlight how Sanford Burnham's incubator is helping CendR turn ground breaking, federally funded research in anti-cancer therapies into a viable start-up commercializing a new, promising treatment for cancer that will target and penetrate tumors enabling specific delivery of therapeutics deep into tumors.

Please join us on Thursday, February 2nd.  To attend, please RSVP to Jessie Womble at jwomble@connect.org
