Program Overview

Winning a Phase II SBIR/STTR grant is the leading objective of your Phase I award. Completing the technical work to prove a concept and writing your reports, while vital, are only part of what is required to succeed to Phase II. In this workshop, we cover the vital components of both winning and managing your Phase I grant to be awarded a Phase II grant, develop your Phase II efficacy study and then to manage that through Phase III commercialization. This workshop is devoted to the critical issues of (a) Designing and Defending a Fundable Study Approach, (b) Phase I & II Award Criteria, (c) Accounting & Government Audits, and (d) Commercialization Plan/Business Model essentials. It covers the requisites in planning and conducting your research project to win Phase I concept and progress through Phase II efficacy. It provides a general guide to facilitate the development of a Research Design and deliver what is expected by reviewers in your proposal: Discussion of your Innovation and its Significance as well as your Research Aims/Objectives, and study approach plus how you will Transition to Commercialization. Additionally, Phase II awardees must pass a “pre-award audit” before any funds are provided. We will discuss the ten accounting and management requirements that must be completed before receiving your funds.

About the Presenter

Martin Kleckner III, PhD MBA, Senior Advisor, TriTech SBDC (UC Irvine) and IN-SD (San Diego SBDC) is a serial entrepreneur who has raised capital for five start-ups and survived two exits, whose ventures and clients have been awarded over $32 Million in federal agency and private funds during the past eighteen months, and teaches the highly-regarded Innovation Corps (I-Corps) program at universities nationwide. Mr. Kleckner has more than 25 years in senior level operations, general management, marketing and business development experience. He works with companies on corporate planning, strategy, commercialization, and public policy throughout Europe, Asia & the Americas. He is currently serving as Adjunct Faculty member for the National Science Foundation I-Corps™ and has been a reviewer for the NIH. In the last 18 months, his portfolio of start-ups has won 11 SBIR grants.
