Industry leaders from Organovo, Viacyte, Invetech and CONNECT will present on how the San Diego biotech industry is rich with capabilities and world-leading examples of technologies that are transforming global health.
Keith Murphy, CEO of Organovo, will discuss the reality of building human organs following the development of the world's first commercial 3D Bioprinter. The Bioprinter was recently recognized as one of TIME magazine's Best Inventions for 2010.
Chad Green, Associate Director of Device Engineering and Manufacturing at Viacyte will outline the unique opportunities that emerging cell therapy technology will provide society in the coming years. This includes more affordable and timely access to personalized stem cell therapies that could treat a range of diseases including diabetes.
Fred Davis, President of Invetech, will discuss recent trends in emerging healthcare including the opportunities for San Diego-based companies in addressing the needs of developing nations.
Duane Roth, CEO of CONNECT, will reflect on the outsourcing/nearsourcing model for biotech companies and will highlight ways to leverage San Diego-based companies to access deep skill sets and world-class facilities to accelerate the journey to a market-ready product.
ABOUT THE SPEAKERS
Fred Davis, President and Managing Director, Invetech
As President and Managing Director of Invetech, Dr. Davis leads an international group of more than 200 engineers, industrial designers and scientists across offices in Melbourne, San Diego and Zurich. Dr. Davis joined the Invetech team in 1989 as a design engineer in new product development. Since that time he has undertaken a range of roles, from design engineering, design management and project leadership, to sales and marketing and business management. He began his R&D career working in research after receiving a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Bristol University (UK).
Chad Green, Associate Director of Device Engineering and Manufacturing, ViaCyte, Inc (formerly Novocell)
Chad Green is responsible for all facets of the encapsulation device program at ViaCyte, including design, engineering, materials, manufacturing and quality compliance. Coming from an academic background, Green has been with ViaCyte, Inc. for more than four years. During that time he has been involved with several critical path projects including optimization of the stem cell differentiation protocols, development of platforms for scale up of stem cell culture and differentiation, proof of concept testing for the PEG encapsulation technology and more recently as group leader for the barrier device program. In this role, he emphasizes Quality by Design in all aspects of device manufacturing and loading to ensure the safe delivery of ViaCyte's stem cell therapies. Green holds Bachelor's degrees in Biochemistry and Microbiology, a Master's degree in Biochemical Engineering and a Ph.D. from UC Davis in Biomedical Engineering.
Keith Murphy, CEO and President, Organovo
Keith Murphy is a veteran of biotechnology startup Alkermes, Inc, where he played a central role on the development team for their first approved product, Nutropin (hGH) Depot. He moved to Amgen in 1997 and developed several other novel formulation and device products. He has 17 years of experience in biotechnology, including serving in Product Strategy and Director of Process Development roles at Amgen. His 10 years at Amgen included four years as Global Operations Leader for the largest development program in Amgen's history, Phase 3 osteoporosis/bone cancer drug denosumab. He holds a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from MIT and is an alumnus of the UCLA Anderson School of Management.
Duane Roth, CEO, CONNECT
Duane Roth is Chief Executive Officer and member of the Board of CONNECT. CONNECT is a nonprofit organization dedicated to creating and sustaining the growth of innovative technology and life science businesses in San Diego. CONNECT has been directly involved with over 2,000 companies since its inception in 1985 and these companies have secured over $10 billion in funding. Prior to joining CONNECT Roth founded Alliance Pharmaceutical Corp., where he serves as Chairman of the Board. Prior to Alliance, he held senior management positions at Johnson & Johnson and American Home Products (now Pfizer) operating companies. He has served as a member of the Board of Directors and executive committees of the Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO), the California Healthcare Institute (CHI) and BIOCOM (past Chair). Roth was appointed to the oversight board of the California Institute of Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger where he serves as Vice Chairman. He is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute. |
