President Obama announces support for new lending initiatives for small businesses

On October 21st, President Obama announced his support for new lending initiatives for the country's small business community, which includes an SBIR increase from $2M to $5M. The overall increase in funds will have a significant impact on local start-ups and the greater innovation community. In addition to the support from the Obama administration, the Small Business Early Stage Investment Act of 2009 was introduced earlier this month and is expected to move to the floor in the next few weeks. The bill allows for grants of up to $100 million for investment in small businesses in targeted industries. CONNECT’s public policy committee, along with much of San Diego's business leadership and regional trade organizations, have been actively involved in this debate since the start of the 111th Congress.
